AUTHENTICATION OF PISCIFORM SPECIES KIT (4 WORK STATIONS)

AIM

To analyse mitochondrial DNA (fish species) extracted from four different food products, to determine whether food fraud. As such, an agarose gel electrophoresis is performed using cyt b gene of mtDNA. In the event that there is no match with the labelled species, discover the corresponding species for each sample.

LEVEL

Can be adapted to O-level, A/AS-level, Science colleges and Universities.

TECHNIQUES

DNA electrophoretic analysis for each sample, which has been previously amplified by PCR and treated with restriction enzymes.

Staining and visualization of DNA bands.

DURATION

A 50-80 minute practice session plus an additional session for complementary activities.

Each kit contains four work stations with all the necessary material and components to perform the experiments: racks, mitochondrial DNA samples (cyt b) for each of the processed food samples, control DNA, agarose gels, patented equipment for “easy” loading of gels, electrophoresis and staining solutions.
